“Teaching is designed to help learners to remember in the long term, the content they have been taught and to integrate new knowledge into larger concepts. (Ofsted, 2019)”

Course Content:

This course has been written in response to Ofsted’s collation of academic research around memory and retention, and in particular cognitive load theory,

It will provide subject leaders with the opportunity to:

  • consider the place of academic language in the classroom, how it might be implemented and the potential for sustaining improvement
  • the role of academic language for maths and English from: teaching to rehearsal; recall, to holding and retaining a line of thought
  • develop a glossary of terms for a consistent approach to academic vocabulary within thinking across the school

Key Outcomes

  • how to develop an ambition to be a thinking school
  • have a view on how to develop pedagogical practice for deep thinking
